In January 2022, Grim Fandango (created by studio Double Fine) celebrated their 7th anniversary for the re-mastered release. So I had to do my own ‘remastering’ by drawing Manuel Calavera, of course.
I attempted drawing him many times before, but really struggled in the past. You know how you want to draw a character in a VERY SPECIFIC way, but you lack the skill or the ‘internal vision’ to get it right? That was the case with Manny, because he has this charming presence, but still a bit distant or cool. Here are my previous attempts(with a bonus Glotis), which are cute but not quite there:
